The movie is set in a rural village in Uttar Pradesh, where two families, the Choudhurys and the Sharmas, are neighbors and friends. Chandan (Sachin) and Gunja (Sadhana) are the children of the Choudhurys and the Sharmas respectively. They grow up together and fall in love with each other. However, their families have already arranged their marriages with different partners. Chandan's elder brother Roop (Inder Thakur) is engaged to Gunja's elder sister Kusum (Mitali), while Gunja is engaged to a city boy named Om Prakash (Pradeep Kumar). Chandan and Gunja decide to elope, but fate intervenes and they are separated by a river flood. Chandan thinks that Gunja has drowned, while Gunja is rescued by a boatman and taken to his village. There, she meets a kind-hearted widow named Ganga (Leela Mishra), who takes her in as her daughter-in-law. Chandan returns to his village and marries Kusum, thinking that Gunja is dead. However, he is unable to forget his true love and remains unhappy.
Meanwhile, Gunja gives birth to a son named Ratan, who is the spitting image of Chandan. Ganga decides to take Gunja and Ratan to her ancestral village, which happens to be the same village where Chandan lives. There, she meets Roop and Kusum, who recognize her as their sister-in-law. They are shocked to see her alive and with a child. They also realize that Chandan and Gunja are still in love with each other. They decide to reunite them by breaking their own marriage. However, they face opposition from their parents, who are unaware of the truth. They also have to deal with Om Prakash, who comes to claim Gunja as his wife.
